LINCOLN PRIMARY SCHOOL WINS COUNTY NETBALL COMPETITION

St. Hughs Primary School in Lincoln won the first ever Schools County High 5 Netball Finals last weekend at Monks Dyke School in Louth.

16 teams involving over 170 children from across the county played in the competition on Saturday 15th May 2010 in front of over 200 parents.

The participating netball teams from each school were split into two groups of eight teams, who all played each other in the group stages.

The winners and runners-up were then forwarded to the semi finals and the winners of them played in the final, where St. Hughs were victorious. Saxilby Junior School came 2nd, Helpringham Primary School came 3rd, and William Alvey Primary School came 4th.

Schools representing the Coastal and Wolds SSA were Tealby, St. Michaels -Louth, Horncastle and Burgh le Marsh.

Our teams started off slowly but gradually got into their stride as games progressed taking several scalps during the group sessions. Although they missed out on the trophies this year all children came a way with a participation medal for their great effort.

I would just like to say, a big thanks on behalf of our school for such an enjoyable tournament on Saturday. It was very well organised and it was a pleasure to have such a good level of umpiring.

This is the first time in netball that there has been an opportunity to go through to a final on this level and it was a great opportunity to promote netball in schools.

The event on Saturday was the culmination of 25 qualifying tournaments and leagues in the run up to the Netball Finals which involved over 2000 pupils, and 160 officiators from all over Lincolnshire.

The event was run by Lincolnshire Competition Manager Paula Hill and the Lincolnshire County Committee who supplied all the umpires on the day.

Paula Hill, the Coastal Wolds School Sports Partnership Competition Manager said:

This was a fantastic event that really showed the commitment of the parents, children and teachers to giving their children access to great schools competition. It is hoped that more schools will buy into the concept of schools competition and enter the competition pathways that have been set up by the Lincolnshire Competition Manager team and School Sport Partnerships.

The Netball High 5s is one eight sports that currently have County Finals for primary Schools. Other sports include Kwik Cricket, Tag Rugby, Tri Golf, Mini Tennis, Volleyball, Rounders and Sport Hall Athletics.
